Savour the Sweet and Tart: 5 Delicious Easy Recipe Ideas for Haskap Berries

Haskap berries, also known as honeyberries, offer a burst of delightful flavour and lots of nutrition. They are becoming more well known as farms like ours are coming into production and bringing them to market. Haskap berries are at least a 5-7 year investment of love and time before they reach full production. We like to say that they taste like a raspberry and a blueberry had a baby! They are super-powered with more anti-oxidants than either wild or cultivated blueberries. With their unique combination of sweet and tart notes, these fresh or frozen berries make a wonderful addition to various dishes. In this post, we suggest five delicious recipe ideas that highlight the delightful taste of haskap berries. Please also check out our blog post about haskap rhubarb sweet rolls; and stay tuned for a special recipe page on our website coming soon!

For the month of November, we are offering 15% off our frozen berries and 25% off wholesale orders of 20lbs or more. You can place your order by visiting our online shop!

1. Haskap Berry Smoothie Bowl

Start your day with a burst of flavor and nutrition with a haskap berry smoothie bowl. Blend frozen haskap berries with yogurt, a ripe banana, a drizzle of honey or maple syrup if desired, and a handful of spinach for a nutritious kick. Top it with your favorite granola, nuts, and more haskap berries or other fruit for a satisfying breakfast treat. There are so many adaptations for this recipe idea! Experiment and have fun!

2. Haskap Berry Jelly

The sweet and tart notes of haskap berries make them a perfect candidate for homemade jelly. Thaw frozen haskap berries over a colander overnight. Then strain and simmer haskap juice with a bit of sugar, lemon juice, and pectin to create a delightful haskap jelly. This jelly is fantastic on toast, scones, or as a topping for ice cream or yogourt. We recommend working with a classic berry jelly recipe, like this one from Bernardin: Click HERE

3. Haskap Berry Salad

Fresh or frozen haskap berries add a pop of color and a burst of flavor to your salad. Toss them into a spinach and goat cheese salad, drizzle with a balsamic vinaigrette, and sprinkle with toasted almonds. Or, as we like to, add them to a mixed salad with microgreens and walnuts and drizzle with a vinaigrette made with haskap! Sweet and tangy haskap berries elevate your salad to a whole new level.

4. Haskap Berry Muffins

Haskap berry muffins are a delightful treat for breakfast or a snack. Fold fresh or frozen haskap berries into a classic blueberry muffin batter, and enjoy the sweet, juicy surprise in every bite. Add a touch of lemon zest for a zesty twist to complement the berries.

5. Haskap Berry Sorbet

Whip up a refreshing haskap berry sorbet for a healthy and delicious snack or dessert. In a high powered blender or food processor, blend haskap berries with mango, banana and/or pineapple. You can mix with any fruit you wish, but we like the creaminess that banana and mango add. Freeze the mixture, and you'll have a vibrant, naturally sweet sorbet that's a delightful dessert. You can also pop the sorbet into a popsicle mold for an easy after school snack for the kiddos.
